BASELIOS PAULOSE II NAGAR, BANGALORE: First Bangalore Diocese Family Conference - BEZALEL 2009 held here at T. John College Campus on Nov 28, Sunday. Assistant Metropolitan of the Diocese His Grace Mor Dioscorus Kuriakose inaugurated the conference. More than 1000 faithful from the diocese participated in the conference. Theme of the conference was 'Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways' (Psalm 128:1). Fr. Abi Varkey and Fr. Samson Meloth led the sessions. Ex Minister Bar Etho Nasiho T. John, Dr. Thomas John, Fr. Givargis George Pulayath spoke on the occasion.

CHUVANNAMANNU, TRICHUR: Feast of St. Joseph celebrated at St. Joseph's JSO Aramana Chapel here on Nov 27 & 28. Metropolitan of Angamali Region of Angamali Diocese, His Grace Dr. Mor Severios Abraham was the chief celebrant for the Holy Qurbono on Nov 28, Saturday, the main day of the feast. Diocesan metropolitan, His Grace Mor Eusebios Kuriakose and priests of the diocese assisted. Earlier, on Nov 27, Friday, Mor Eusebios hosted the flag after the Holy Qurbono. Tabloid Competition for Diocesan JSCYA Units held, in which the St. Mary's JSO Church, Kannara was the champion. St. Mary's JSO Church, Kattilapoovam bagged first prize in the Inter Church Choir Competition held on the same day. Public meeting was held at chapelpremises on Nov 28. Hon. Speaker K. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the meeting. P. K Biju MP was the chief guest. Dr. Mor Severios Abraham presided over. Priests from the diocese with 25 years of service, meritorious students in SSLC, HSC & JSSLC were honoured.

'Chithariya Muthukal' released

PUTHENCURIZ: H.B Catholicose Dr. Baselios Thomas I released the book 'Chithariya Muthukal' written by L.L Ignatius Aphrem I Patriarch, at Working Committee meeting held at Patriarchal Centre here. The book was translated to Malayalam by renowned scholar Very Rev. Dr. Kuriakose Moolayil Cor Episcopa and published by Mor Adai Study Circle (MASC). Metropolitans of the church and members of W. C were present.

Feast of St. Joseph at St. Joseph's JSO Aramana Chapel, Chuvannamannu, Trichur

CHUVANNAMANNU, TRICHUR: The feast of St. Joseph will be celebrated on November 27 & 28, at St. Joseph's JSO Aramana Chapel here. Their Graces Dr. Mor Severios Abraham and Mor Eusebios Kuriakose will lead this year's feast. Inter Church Choir competition and Tabliod competition for Diocesan JSCYA units held yesterday. Dr. Mor Severios Abraham will celebrate Holy Qurbono today, the main day of the feast. Mor Eusebios Kuriakose will assist. A public function will be held today after the Holy Mass. Hon. Speaker K. Radhakrishnan will inaugurate. P. C Chacko MP, P. K Biju MP, Deputy Speaker Jose Baby, Trichur District Press Club President Joy Mannathoor will felicitate on the occasion. Priests with 25 years service in the diocese, meritorious students in SSLC, HSC & JSSLC, and 11 State level players from the diocese will be honoured. This is only the second parish consecrated in the name of St. Josph in our Holy Church, after St. Joseph's JSO Cathedral, Kottayam.

It is heartening to report that,  as in the past, many members from the sister churches including their Vicars also attended the first session on 27^th and much better participation on Saturday and Sunday is expected.

Chennai Diocese of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church has come into force

The first Diocesan Council members with H.B Catholicose and Dr. Mor Clemis Kuriakose

CHENNAI: Chennai Diocese of Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church has come into force. Official announcement on the formation of  Chennai  Diocese  which includes Tamilnadu and  Andhra Pradesh, was made during the first Diocesan Council meeting  held under the chairmanship of H.B Catholicose Dr. Baselios Thomas I, on 22 November 2009 in Chennai. His Grace Dr. Mor Clemis Kuriakose graced the occasion. Idukki Diocese Metropolitan H.G Dr. Mor Clemis Kuriakose will hold additional charges of the newly formed Chennai Diocese. The first Council meeting  was attended by  representatives from Jacobite churches  in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh.

`Abhayam’ – Paliative Care Centre  for Cancer patients consecrated

CHENNAI: H.B Catholicose Dr. Baselios Thomas I consecrated `Abhayam’ – Palliative Care Centre  for Cancer patients, a unit of St. Thomas Charitable Trust under the patronage of St. Thomas JSO Church, Annanagar, Chennai, in Shanthibhavan, Sholavaram in the outskirts of Chennai City and H.G. Dr. Mor  Clemis  Kuriakose Metropolitan graced the occasion. Later Metropolitans visited inmates of Shanthibhavan, a destitute home for aged run by the Trust.

Bangalore Queens Road St. Mary's Sunday School wins in the Inter Sunday School Competition

BANGALORE: An Inter Sunday school completion was organized by United Theological College (UTC) as a part of the centenary year celebrations, Bangalore on 21.11.09, Saturday. 23 Sunday schools participated in the completion from various churches like Jacobite, Marthoma, CSI, Lutheran etc from Bangalore.
St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Cathedral, Queen's road, Bangalore won the title and retains the overall trophy. The Sunday school won first prize in choreography, group song, painting, cartoon and fancy dress, 2nd prizes in elocution and third prize in quiz.

'Knanaya Educational Community Development and Cultural Society' Started functioning

OTHERA: A new charitable society started in the name of “Knanaya Educational Community Development and Cultural Society” under Knanaya Archdiocese. The Society aims in the development of educational institutions under Knanaya Archdiocese. As a foremost step the new society has taken over the St. Mary’s Central CBSE School, Othera which was functioning in the premises of St. Mary’s Knanaya JSO Church here. Poabson Group has donated 10 acres of land for the society. A PTA Meeting was called on 11th November 2009 at S. Mary’s Knanaya JSO Church, Othera. His Grace Mor Gregorios Kuriakose, Metropolitan of Kallisserry & Malabar Regions of the Arch Diocese and President of Society Inaugurated the Meeting.

Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Pavle dies

BELGRADE, SERBIA: Patriarch Pavle, who headed the Serbian Orthodox Church during the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s as Serbs warred with neighbours of other faiths, died on Sunday, Nov 15, 2009. Pavle was born Gojko Stojcevic in 1914 in Kucanci, a village then in the Austro-Hungarian empire and is now in Croatia. In 1957, he became bishop in charge of Kosovo, by then home to an Albanian majority. He became patriarch in 1990.

Angamaly St. Mary's JSO Church declared as Soonoro Cathedral

ANGAMALY: As thousands of devotees knelt in prayer, the St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in Angamaly was formally declared as ‘Soonoro’ Cathedral in a ceremony held at the church alter on Sunday. Holy Episcopal Synod Secretary His Grace Dr. Mor Gregorios Joseph read out the bull from Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas elevating the church. Catholicose His Beatitude Dr. Baselios Thomas I was also present.

The ceremony began with the holy Eucharist, celebrated by the Catholicose along with Their Graces Dr. Mor Gregorios Joseph, Dr. Mor Severios Abraham, Mor Eusebius Kuriakose, Mor Chrisostomos Markose and Mor Athanasius Elias.

The announcement ceremony was preceded by a spiritual procession led by Catholicose Dr. Baselios Thomas I to the cemetery for offering homage to the forefathers. Metropolitans, priests and the faithful accompanied His Beatitude.

Later, a public meeting presided over by Dr. Mor Severios Abraham was held on the church premises. Inaugurating the meeting, Dr. Baselios Thomas I said that the announcement of raising the church as Soonoro Cathedral was a historic moment for the churches in India.

Syro Malabar Church Ernakulam Auxiliary Bishop Mar Sebastian Idayanthrath delivered the keynote address and K. Narayana Kurup, jurist, was the chief guest. Ministers Jose Thettayil and S. Sharma, K. P. Dhanapalan, MP, and Mor Athanasius Elias were among those who spoke on the occasion.

All the family units participated in the rally in a disciplined manner keeping the spirit of being under the Holy Throne of St. Peter in Antioch. Colorful and disciplined rally with lots of plots and all the parishners started from church at 4.00 PM & ended at Kandanad St. Mary's High School ground. Catholicose H.B Dr. Baselios Thomas I inaugurated the public function held at the high school ground. H.G Dr. Mor Ivanios Mathews presided over the meeting. H.G Mor Aphrem Mathews, H.G Mor Athanasius Elias, H.G Dr. Mor Clemis Kuriakose, Bar Etho M'heero Thampu George Thukalan, Vicar of the Cathedral Very Rev Cor Episcopus John Punnachalil , Asst. 1929th Dukhrono of St. Philip, the disciple (? - AD 80)

St. Philip, a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, was called by our Lord the day after St. Peter and St. Andrew. We learn from tradition that he was then a married man, and that he had several daughters, three of whom reached eminent sanctity. Like the other Apostles, St. Philip left all things to follow Christ. His name is frequently mentioned in the Holy Gospels.

After the Ascension of his Divine Master, St. Philip preached the Gospel in that part of Asia Minor called Phrygia, which was then a province of the Roman Empire. It is supposed that he was buried at Hierapolis in Phrygia (AD 80).

VIENNA: Pro-Oriente Second Colloquium Syriacum was held on 4-6 November at Vienna. The Theme of the Symposium was Syriac Christianity in the Middle East and India Today: Contributions and challenges. At the Inaugural session the Archbishop of Vienna H.E. Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn presided over the opening prayer and cordially welcomed the participants. He recalled spirit and vision of the founder of Pro Oriente, the late Cardinal Franz Koenig, whose life was dedicated to dialogue and a profound love for Oriental Christianity. He expressed his deep hope that the studies of the Pro Oriente Colloquim Syriacum highlighting the urgency of religious freedom and pluralism will contribute to a strengthening of the ecumenical dialogue. Further he encouraged the participants to reflect together on the motives and impacts of emigration for the future of Christianity in the Middle East. Pro Oriente President Johann Marthe welcomed the participants, who came from India, Syria, USA, Lebanon, Great Britain, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

OHIO, USA: The prayers of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Christian Community in Cleveland, Ohio came to fruition with the inaugural service of St Basil's Syriac Orthodox Church, Cleveland on 8th November 2009 by Rev. Fr. Roy Paul Vettickattil with the Kalpana by His Eminence Archbishop Mor Theethoos Yeldho Pathickal, the Archbishop of Malankara Arch Diocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in North America.

The new Church will be operating out of the facilities of Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ Church, 14660 Alexander Road, Walton Hills, Ohio 44146 till the Church establish it's own facilities.

NORTH PARAVUR: H.B Catholicose Dr. Baselios Thomas I lead the Holy Penta Mass today.  In between the Holy Mass H.B Catholica Bava announced, there will be Monthly perunnal of St. Gregorious observed at the church every second Saturday of the month. This Perunnal Mass will be offered on the Holy Thronose in the name of St. Gregorious Geevarghese, near to the Holy relic of saint is installed.

This is one of the churches where "Holy Relics" of St. Gregorious is installed.

It was in this church, in AD 1876, the then Patriarch of Antioch Moran Mor Ignatius Peter IV, consecrated Chathuruthil Mor Gregorios Geevarghese, popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni along with three other bishops as per the decision of the historic Mulanthuruthy Synod.

(The name 'Mor Gregorios' given to Chathuruthil Rabban by the Patriarch during the Episcopal consecration, was the honourable titular of the Metropolitan of Jerusalem Arch diocese (the 5th Patriarch) under the Holy See of Antioch)

NEW YORK: On Tuesday, October 27, 2009, a special luncheon was hosted at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America here to honour His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. The event brought together a large number of religious leaders from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Faiths. NEW JERSEY: Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim visited His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the Holy See of St. Mark’s at the Coptic Orthodox Papal Residence in Cedar Grove, here to inquire about His Holiness’ health, on Saturday, September 26. His Eminence was accompanied by the Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun of St. Mark’s Cathedral. Several Coptic bishops were also present.

His Holiness the Pope was on a one day visit to New Jersey on his way to Cairo after routine visit with his physicians in Cleveland, Ohio.

In his warm welcome remarks, His Holiness highlighted the strong and historical relationship between the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch. He emphasized the full communion which exists between the two churches and the shared witness to the faith which both churches continue to bear through many persecutions and challenges.

His Eminence the Archbishop briefed His Holiness about the activities of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in North America underlining the important role of the “Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United States” which constitutes the official organ of the joint activities of these churches. NEW JERSEY: The Standing Conference of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in America held its annual Fall meeting at St. Leon Armenian Church in Fair Lawn, New Jersey on October 19, 2009, Tuesday. His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim started the meeting with a prayer. His Eminence Khajag Barsamian presided over the meeting. Arch Bishop His Eminence Mor Theethoos Yeldho represented the Malankara Arch Diocese of North America.

25th Dukhrono of Mor Philaxinos Samuel (Malankarayude Soorya Thejas)

MEENANGADI: 25th Dukhrono of Late Lamented Mor Philaxinos Samuel (Malankarayude Soorya Thejas), popularly known as 'Samuel Thirumeni' will be held at St. Peter's & St. Paul's JSO Cathedral, here on Jan 16, 2010, where the metropolitan is entombed. A 501 member committee was formed on the meeting held on Oct 25, Sunday at Cathedral. Various programmes are to be conducted as a part of the Dukhrono, which includes construction of Samuel Mor Philaxinos Homes for the poor. Holy 25nmel Qurbono will be conducted at Meenangadi Cathedral on Jan 16 2010, Saturday. Hon'ble Ministers, Members of Parliament, MLAs and other dignitaries will be present in the public meeting which will be conducted at the same day at the Cathedral premises.

KOCHI: H.B Catholicose Dr. Baselios Thomas I, Holy Episcopal Synod Secretary H.G Dr. Mor Gregorios Joseph, Metropolitans Their Graces Mor Dioscorus Kuriakose and Dr. Mor Clemis Kuriakose paid homage to Late Arch Bishop Dr. Daniel Acharuparampil at St. Francis Assissi Cathedral here on Oct 27, Tuesday on behalf of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. The body will be kept at the Cathedral the whole day and the funeral is slated for Wednesday evening at 3.30.

NEW YORK: 9th Annual Orthodox Prayer Service & Reception for the United Nations Community organized by the Joint Commission of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches (SCOBA / SCOOCH) was held on Monday, October 26th at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Cathedral, New York. The prayer was presided over by HIS  HOLINESS BARTHOLOMEW, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch.

Mr. Vijay Nambiar, Chief of Staff of the United Nations Secretary-General read the message from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The message emphasized the urgency in brining people from various faith organizations to join hands in the resolving the global socio-environmental issues. Remarks were made by Strobe Talbott, President of the Brookings Institutions.

GOA: Metropolitan of Niranam Diocese & Patriarchal Vicar for U.K His Grace Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese was unanimously elected as the Chairperson of Student Christian Movement of India (SCMI), at the General Committee of SCMI concluded on Oct 27, here, for the next biennium. Dr. Mor Coorilos delivered key note address at the General Committee. SCMI is affiliated to the World Student Christian Federation, the oldest ecumenical student movement, founded in Vadstena, Sweden in 1895. The Federation grew with the emergence of national movements including the Indian SCM founded in 1912 at Serampore, Calcutta.

K.M Varkey passed away in Al Ain

AL AIN: K.M Varkey passed away in Al Ain due to a severe heart failure. He was 56, and survived by wife Chinnamma Korah and daughters Jeni and Jinsi. He was an active member of Al Ain St. George JSO Simhasana Church and was the main organiser of the church. He belonged to Mor Kauma JSO Church, Vengoor.
