While addressing as the Chief Guest at the North
East Regional Conference of the Women’s League, a vital spiritual
organization of the Malankara Archdiocese of the Universal Syrian
Orthodox Church in North America, His Grace Dr.Abraham Mor Severios,
the Regional Metropolitan of Ankamaly(Kerala) stated that the women
of the church are coheirs and inseparable partners & companions in
building up the Holy Church. The Regional Conference held at the
famous White Plains St.Mary’s Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church, New
York on Saturday, March 11th 2012 was presided over by Archbishop
H.E.Mor Titus Yeldho where hundreds of women were attending. In his
presidential address Archbishop Mor Titus reiterated that the
appreciative roles of Women’s League members in different capacities
such as daughters, mothers, grandmothers, younger and older sisters
as well as life partners, make a big difference in the progress of
each individual parish and of the Archdiocese as a whole. Mrs.
Kunjamma Babu Jacob, Unit Secretary of Women’s League and Mr.Jibu
Vettikkattil, Parish Secretary, both of White Plains Church welcomed
all the attendees to this annual conference and to the parish.
Rev.Fr.Varghese Paul (Vicar of White Plains St. Mary's and Personal
Secretary to the Archbishop) aroused the audience that the period of
great lent is a period of self purification for the faithful. He
also explained the ways and means of such sanctification that leads
the faithful to salvation ultimately. Women’s League member
Mrs.Shana Joshua of St.Peters Syrian Orthodox Church, Philadelphia
impressively presented her views on the theme. Bible quiz
competition, business meeting were among many items of agenda of the
day. Business meeting was lead by Mrs.Susan Varkey, the treasurer of
the League and Mrs.Milon Roy, Regional Secretary, North East Region.
Women’s League members of St.Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church,
Lynbrook, won reward for attaining highest points in the quiz
competition. The gospel songs by St.Mary’s choir was very melodious.
Mrs.Manju Thomas of White Plains St.Mary's was the Master of
Ceremony of this conference. A decision was taken for a combined
meeting of St.Mary’s Women’s League and St.Paul’s Men’s Prayer
Fellowship under the Archdiocese to be held in September 2012 at
St.Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church,Lynbrook,New York. The meeting was
concluded with vote of thanks by Mrs.Milon Roy and a feast of
fellowship

A New Concept for Democracy and Power
Needed: Dr. Coorilos Geevarghese
THIRUVANATHAPURAM: At a time when
the subaltern population of India is dreaming of a new civil
society beyond traditional political boundaries, the need of
the hour is a new concept of the State, democracy, and
power, the bishop of the Niranom diocese Geevarghese Mar
Coorilos has said.
He was delivering the G. Rajeshkumar
memorial lecture on the topic ‘Media and people's
agitations' at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on
Thursday.
The media, which has the power to make or
break a movement, should ask itself which face of India it
is projecting. Large sections of the media projected Anna
Hazare's anti-corruption movement as a never-before
phenomenon. The hype and the hysteria generated on this was
incredible. Similar was the treatment given to the agitation
by Baba Ramdev.
“But which were the faces seen associated
with such movements? Middle-class intellectuals, academics,
and human rights activists. Most of them belonged to the
upper castes. When a team was set up to draft a bill, there
was no place in it for a Dalit, for the religious
minorities, and there was no woman there,” he said.
The faces commonly seen in discussions on
TV channels were the same. He asked where the faces and
voices of the Adivasis, their women, the Dalits, and the
fishermen were. “A fresh concept of a people's movement is
needed; one from the perspective of the victims, the
oppressed” he said.
Conventional political parties had failed
the subaltern population of India. There was nothing left in
the Left politics and there was nothing right with the
Right, he pointed out.
“The CPI(M) views any new type of public
movement with suspicion and tries to suppress it. Chengara
is a good example,” Bishop Coorilos said.
“Why are mainstream political parties
afraid of, say, a Gothra Mahasabha? Why is their sense of
democracy not sought to be understood? What is wrong with a
decentralised notion of power? Not the World Bank's People's
Planning,” he pointed out.
Tools of Marxian analysis developed
mostly for Europe could not be applied as such to India. If
the Left parties continued to ignore the caste question in
the country, they would remain confined to Kerala and West
Bengal. It was time the Left took Ambedkar seriously. It had
not so far accepted his critique of Marx.
Caste inequality should be tackled
alongside economic inequality, he added.

of Mid-Lent (•Elevation of the Cross)/King Abgar
Christianity, as local
tradition tells, came to Edessa (modern Urfa in South-East
Turkey) during the time of the Apostles. This is reported in a
number of documents including the Doctrine of Addai, one of the
earliest Syriac Christian writings, and Eusebius´s
Ecclesiastical History. Eusebius tells that he visited the
archives of Edessa
and examined a correspondence between the city's king, Abgar
Ukomo, and no other than Jesus Himself. At Mid Lent, the Syriac
Orthodox Church commemorates King Abgar who, according to this
story, was the first king to adopt Christianity, and thus Edessa
became the first Christian kingdom.Here is the correspondence
between King Abgar and Christ:
"Abgar Ukomo, the toparch, to Jesus the good Savior who has
appeared in the district of Jerusalem, greetings. I have heard
concerning you and your cures, how they are accomplished by you
without drugs and herbs … And when I heard of all these things
concerning you I decided that it is one of two things, either
that you are God and came down from Heaven to do these things,
or are the Son of God for doing these things. For this reason I
write to beg you to hasten to me and to heal the suffering which
I have …"
The reply, according to the same tradition, was carried by a
certain Ananias:
"Blessed are you who believed in me, not having seen me … Now
concerning what you wrote to me, to come to you, I must first
complete here all for which I was sent, and after thus
completing it be taken up to Him who sent me; and when I have
been taken up, I will send to you one of my disciples to heal
your suffering and give life to you and those with you." The
story continues telling how one of the Seventy disciples was
sent to King Abgar.
Annan Meets Syria’s Mufti and Representatives of Religious Sects
in Syria
DAMASCUS,(SANA):The UN Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan said his
mission is aimed at discussing steps that might help in ending
the violence, ensuring the access of humanitarian aid and
starting political dialogue in Syria.Meeting
Grand Mufti of the Syrian Arab Republic Ahmad Badr EddinHassoun
and representatives of the religious sects in Syria, Annan hoped
he would help achieve what could contribute to making democratic
reforms and enhancing respect of human rights in Syria.Annan
wished for Syria to be secure and to invest the plurality in it
to enhance reconciliation and tolerance and circulate them at
the mosques and churches and across all the sects.He said that
he spoke with the Security Council’s members, the EU ambassadors
and a number of officials and opinion leaders in the world and
called on them to cooperate to ensure peace in Syria.The UN
envoy said that he met President Bashar al-Assad and some
opposition figures, traders, businessmen and people from all
spectrums of the Syrian society yesterday and found that
everybody want a solution and a compromise.Annan stressed that
the Syrians alone are able to solve their problems and that his
mission is to help them do so.For his part, Mufti Hassoun called
upon those who carry weapons and claim “peacefulness” to resort
to dialogue, adding that those who have taken up weapons to
sabotage their homeland in service of foreign agendas are not
Syrian, because Syria has always been the country of
co-existence where there is no difference between a Christian
and a Muslim.In turn, His Beatitude Patriarch Ignatius IV (Hazim)
of Antioch and all the East said that the lies and fabrications
propagated by the instigative channels about the situation of
Christians in Syria are untrue and mere illusions in the minds
of some Europeans.“In Syria, we, Muslims and Christians, live as
brothers and share everything,” His Beatitude added, wishing
Annan success in his mission and stressing to work with him to
help him achieve this.

Diocese to organize One day Retreat On March 17
THIRUVALLA: A one day retreat will be held on Saturday, the
17th of March, at Mazhuvangadu St. Mary's Jacobite Church,

Perunnal & foundation day celebrations at St. Mary's JSOC,
Poothamkutty, Angamaly.
POOTHAMKUTTY: The
Vachanippu perunal and 9th Foundation Day Celebrations of the St.
Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Poothamkutty, one among the
illustrious Marian Pilgrim centers of the Holy Church, will be held
from 22nd to 25th March 2012. To mark the beginning of the
celebrations, perunal flag will be hoisted on Sunday, the 18th March
soon after the holy Qurbana by the Vicar Rev. Fr. Alias Ipe Parackal
followed by a meeting for the Sunday School children, Parents and
Teachers at the church premises. As part of the perunnal
preparations, three- day Family Renewing Retreat will be held under
the auspices of St. Pauls Mission of India, on 22nd, 23rd & 24th
March. On 24th evening, a majestic reception will be accorded to the
newly consecrated metropolitans their Graces Alias Mor Julius and
Dr. Mathews Mor Antheemos. A public meeting has been arranged to
felicitate the newly ordained bishops soon after the evening prayer.
H.G. Alias Mor Julius will lead the Holy Qurbana on Sunday, 25th
March, the day of Vachanippu perunal. Nercha will be distributed to

HAMBURG, (KAP):
The
Syrian Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo, Mor Gregorios Yohanna
Ibrahim, at a panel discussion in Hamburg pointed out that
Christians and other minorities would be tolerated by the government
Assad. "We are not persecuted," he said. "I doubt that anyone can
give me an example of a country where there is a greater religious
tolerance than in Syria." During the panel discussion at the
Catholic Academy in Hamburg, it was Syria among others came because
of the statements of the Metropolitan on Monday evening to
tumultuous scenes.The Syrian church leaders insisted that the
Christians in Syria "wholeheartedly" supported all peaceful
demonstrations and protests, demanding "reforms at all levels". He,
however, protest against any foreign intervention, "We do not need
any interference from anyone." The Metropolitan warned of a
protracted civil war: "It is possible that Syria is the second
Lebanon after 1975."
The Metropolitan of Aleppo had recently called a "Christian Orient
Information" published by the magazine appeal to the warring
factions to renounce violence, murder and destruction, leading to a
"dialogue in an atmosphere of national unity." He warned against
divisive tendencies, civil war and foreign intervention.

Ireneous Metropolitan has approved the decision of the General Body
of St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church – to organize a
monthly service in the North Western suburbs of Melbourne.The
Patriarchal Vicar will be on an apostolic visit to the diocese and
is expected to arrive at Tullamarine Airport at around 8:20 pm on
Thursday, 08/03/2012. The first Holy Qurbano in the North Western
Suburbs will be led by His Grace. His Grace will be assisted by the

Construction of
Gregorian Chapel cum Meditation Centre at Anikkadu Progressing
ANIKKADU: The construction work of the proposed Gregorian Open
Chapel cum Meditation Centre at Anikkadu, Mallappally is progressing
well. The Meditation Centre cum Open Chapel is part of a Retreat and
Conference Centre Complex of the Niranam Diocese of the Jacobite
Syrian Church. Two and a half acres of land, which is a beautiful
and serene mount top, was donated to the Diocese by Pannikottu
Vadakkedathu family of Puramattam. God willing, this year's feet
washing ceremony will be held at the new chapel in Anikkadu on
Maundy Thursday. The administrative office block was already
consecrated by His Beatutude Catholicos Baselious Thomas 1 last
year. Your prayers are solicited for the successful completion of
the project.

Indefinite "Prarthana
Yajnam" at Mor Michael Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Mamalassery
started by the faithful of the Church.
MAMMALASSERRY: The faithful parishioners of Mor
Michael Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Mamalassery, who are being
persecuted by the Methran Kakshis for their faith and are facing
injustice from the government machinery have started an indefinite "Prarthana
Yajnam" which has already passed three days. The faithful
parishioners are being restricted from worshipping in the Church
that was built by their forefathers because of the defection of two
priests, who were serving in this parish, to Methran Kakshi. The "Prarthana
Yajnam" is being led by the vicar, Rev. Fr. Varghese Pullyattel and
the trustees Shri. Jacob Mathew Mangalathu & Shri. Joy Thamarasseril
who are leading a large gathering of faithful. They have decided to
continue the "Prarthana Yajnam" until their right to worship in
their Church is re-instated.
The "Prarthana Yajnam" is being co-ordinated by the various family
units functioning under the church and it is being held at the
Kurishupally near the Church.

KANYATTUNIRAPPU: The "Prarthana Yajnam" being conducted
by the parishioners of St. John's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church,
Kanyattunirappu against the injustice and persecution being faced by
them has completed 50 days. HG Mor Ivanios Mathews Metropolitan &
Bar Etho Kasheero Shri. Thambu George Thukalan led the "Prarthana
Yajnam" on the 50th day.

ANGAMALY: The Angamaly Region
Grand Bible Convention which started on 29th February concluded on
Sunday, 4th March 2012 at St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Soonoro
Cathedral Church premises. Eminent Gospel preachers such as H. G.
Dr. Abraham Mor Severios, H.G. Alias Mor Julius, H.G. Dr. Mathews
Mor Antheemos, Dr. Alias Mor Athanasius, V. Rev. Paulose Parekara
Cor-episcopa, Rev. Fr. Shibu Kurien, Rev.Fr. Eldhose Pulinchotil
delivered gospel messages on various days.
Retreats were held under the auspices of Mor Gregorios Retreat
Centre, Thuthootty and Gethsemon Retreat Centre, Puthencruz.
“Mission Vision-12” programme which was inaugurated by Sri. Eldhose
Kunnappilly, President of the District Panchayat was a grand
success. Group Discussions were held Mission-wise i.e, Child &
teenage Mission, Youth Mission, bible Mission, Vanitha Mission, Eco
Mission, Prayer Mission, Welfare Mission, Family Mission, de
addiction Mission and Old age Mission.

Mor Polycarpos Zacharias visited St. Ignatius JSO Church Manipal
and offered Holy Qurbono on 04th March 2012. He was accompanied

Kavunkal. After the Holy Qurbono, His Grace spent time with the
youth members of the Church and guided them with his valuable

Narayana Panicker passes away
KOCHI: P K Narayana Panicker,
longtime general secretary, present
president of the Nair Service Society (NSS)
and one of the moderate voices that
dominated Kerala's social life for the past
three decades or more, is no more. His end
came at his residence on Wednesday. He was
81. His funeral will be held on his
residential premises at 4 p.m. on Thursday,
with State honours.
His Beatitude Catholicos & Metropolitan of
India, Dr. Baselios Thomas I & Dr. Mor
Coorilos Geevarghese of Niranam &
Thiruvananthapuram Dioceses condoled.
Narayana Panicker was a great personality,
who has earned respect from all sects,
remembered His Beatitude. The state will be
missing a leader who stood firmly for social
harmony, said Dr. Coorilos Geevarghese in a

Mathew Aryadanpakkal, member of the Chengalam St. Thomas JSO
Church in Kottayam diocese. The Patriarchal medal and
certificate will be presented to Manoj Mathew by His Grace Mor
Themotheos Thomas, Metropolitan of Kottayam Diocese, in a public
function which will be convened, immediately after the Holy
Qurbono on Saturday 3rd March 2012 at the St. Joseph’s
Cathedral, Kottayam.
Chev. Manoj
Mathew is well known as the author of innumerable number
articles in various Church magazines in the last twenty odd
years and is still continuing the same through ‘Visawasa
Samrakashakan’, ‘The Journal of Kottayam diocese’ and other
Church magazines & souvenirs.
Since 1999, he
is a member of the Managing Committee of the Jacobite Syrian
Christian Church and also represents his parish in the Kottayam
diocesan Council. He is also a central committee member of
‘Antiochya Viswasa Samrakshana Samithy’ for many years now.
Started as a Sunday School teacher in 1982, he has represented
the various organizations associated with his parish as well as
the Malankara Church since 1985. He is presently the Joint
Secretary of the Y.M.C.A., Chengalam Region.
Chev. Manoj
Mathew, son of late A M Mathew & Ponnamma Mathew, hails from the
Aryadanpakkal family of Chengalam near Kumarakom. He is married
to Sheeba and has two children Amal & Ajesh. After garnering the
Master degree in Science he has worked in a private firm for a
few months and later joined the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB)
and is presently working in its Kottayam office.
Consultation on Christian Witness in a
Multi-Religious World Begins in Bangalore
BANGALORE: A National Level Church
Leaders consultation on "Christian Witness in a Multi-Religious
World: Recommendations for Conduct" has begun at the Ecumenical
Christian Centre, Whitefield, Bangalore. The consultation which
is being organized by the NCCI, BTESSC and EFI (Evangelical
Fellowship of India) will conclude on March 02, Friday. The main
aim of the consultation is to discuss the Code of Conduct
document prepared by the WCC, WEA (World Evangelical alliance)
and the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue
together. Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese, Metropolitan of Niranam
Diocese who has been involved in the drafting of this document
on behalf of the WCC, made a presentation on Feb 29, Wednesday.
About 40 theologians and church leaders are participating in
this three day Consultation in Bangalore.
Holy relics of Msabrono Nasiho
Mor Coorilos Kuriakose installed at Kavumbhagom Cathedral
THIRUVALLA: The Holy relics of
Late Lamented Metropolitan Msabrono Nasiho Mor
Coorilos Kuriakose was installed at Kavumbhaghom St. George
Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Cathedral, by the hands of
Metropolitans Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese of Niranam
Diocese & Mor Barnabas Geevarghese of Spiritual
Organizations. Mor Coorilos Kuriakose was the former
metropolitan of Southern Dioceses of Jacobite Syrian Church
and was instrumental in the development of these dioceses.
Mor Coorilos Kuriakose passed away in the year 1995 and
was entombed at MMD Dayaro, Adoor.
