Felicitation to Shri. V.V. Thambi IPS on his
promotion as Director General of Police (Crime) (DGP) in West Bengal
KOLKATA: The St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian
Orthodox Church in Kolkata organised a meeting immediately after the
Holy Qurbono on Sunday, the 22nd May 2011, to felicitate its member,
Shri. V. V. Thambi IPS, on his promotion as the Director General of
Police (Crime), in the State of West Bengal. The meeting was chaired
by the Vicar, Rev. Fr. Varghese Payanadathu, and the main speaker
was Rev. Fr. (Dr.) K. P. Aleaz, who is also the member priest of the
Parish.
The welcome address was given by the Vice
President, Shri. M. O. Varughese, who has highlighted the
unconditional support being given by Shri. Thambi to his parish,
irrespective of his very busy schedules. He also reminded Shri.
Thambi that not only the Kolkata Parish but also the entire Jacobite
Syrian Orthodox Church need his continued support and guidance. In
his address Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Aleaz pointed out that while very senior
Police Officers normally do not have much faith in God Almighty,
Shri. Thambi is truly an exception. Smt. Lini Rajesh spoke on behalf
of the ladies of the parish and she also sought the help of Shri.
Thambi in the activities of the Parish. Every speaker on the
occasion appreciated the humbleness and the vast knowledge of Shri.
Thambi in every field.
Managing Committee Member, Shri. Kurien John,
read out out the “Mangla Patram” and the same was handed over to
Shri. Thambi by the Vicar on behalf of the parish. The senior most
member, Shri. C. K. Daniel, handed over a memento to Shri. Thambi as
a token of appreciation. While giving the reply speech, Shri. Thambi
thanked the parish and also narrated some of the very difficult
situations faced by him in his career where he always ensured that
justice is done to the people. The meeting ended with a closing
prayer by Aleaz Achen, which was followed by light refreshments to
all those who were present in the Church.

Dr. Mar
George Alencherry succeeds Mar Varkey Vithayathil
KOCHI:
The synod of Syro Malabar Church held at Mount St. Thomas, the
Headquarters of the church selected Dr. Mar George Alencherry,
Bishop of Thuckalay (Mission Diocese of Syro Malabar Church), as the
new Major Archbishop. He was chosen at the synod convened at the
sabha’s headquarters in Mount St Thomas in Kakkenad and he replaces
Archbishop Mar Varkey Vithayathil, who died months back. Alencherry
was chosen by 46 bishops through voting. The announcement came at
the same time in Vatican and Kochi. Also he will be the Archbishop
of Ernakulam - Ankamali Archdiocese. The enthronement of Dr.
Alencherry will held at Kochi St. Mary's Basalica on May 29, Sunday
at 2.45 PM.
Dr. Alencherry was born on
19 April 1945 at Thuruthy in Kottayam. After his school education he
joined the seminary and was ordained priest on December 18, 1972. He
had done his B A (Economics) from the Kerala University with second
rank, in 1965. After his ordination he successfully completed his
M.Th. from the Pontifical Theological Institute, Alwaye where he
came first. He also has a D.S.E.B. and D.Th. conjointly from
Sorbonne University and Institut Caholique de Paris, France in 1986.
During his priestly
ministry, he held many offices in the Archdiocese of Changanacherry
and elsewhere. From 1976 to 78 he was the Director of Catechetics,
from 1986 to 93 he was the Deputy Secretary of KCBC, from 1986 to 91
he was the Director of the Pastoral Orientation Centre at
Palarivattam, Professor at Paurastya Vidyapitham, Kottayam from
1986-97, Protosyncellus of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry from
1994 to 97.

Zakka I Iwas honoured Fr. Sunny John Plamthottathil of Honnavar
Mission with Petral Cross and Chain. His Beatitude Catholicos
Baselios Thomas I will present the honour to Fr. Sunny John on
behalf of His Holiness, in a solemn function which will be held at
Mangalore. Fr. Sunny John serves as the Vicar of St. Antony's JSO
Cathedral, Jeppu, Mangalore for the past 5 years. He was
instrumental in the construction of the cathedral and some other
churches in the mission and in the organization of the mission,
since he was ordained as priest. Fr. Sunny John serves other
churches in Karnataka, which includes St. Ignatius JSO Church, KR
Puram, Bangalore. He belongs to Plamthottathil family which traces
its origin at Piravom, Kerala. Piravom Valiya Pally was their home
parish. He holds BA in English (Mysore University), MA in English (Mysore
University), B.Ed (Bangalore University) and M.Ed (Mangalore
University) in his credit and is pursuing higher studies in
Education. He has completed Theological Education from MSOT
Seminary, Mulamthuruthy and holds BD (Serampore University) in his
credit.

stone of newly construction St. Gregorios JSO Knanaya church West-Othera

Festival of St.Mary's for the Crops and the third anniversary of
St.Marys Syriac Orthodox Church in the town of Bergenfield,
NewJersey will be held on Saturday, May 21st. His Eminence Mor Titus

Malankara Archdiocese in North America will be the Chief Celebrant

St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Simhasana Church,Al Ain, United
Arab Emirates will be elevated to Cathedral by His Holiness
Patriarch Ignatius Zakka Iwas and will be declared by His Beatitude
Catholicos Baselios Thomas I on May 13th 2011.On the same day H.B
Catholicos Baselios Thomas I will install Holy relic of Saint
Gregorios Chathuruthil (Parumala Thirumeni). Diocesan Metropolitan
Mor Aphrem Mathews will be leading and presiding the entire
programmes.
The Church is
located at the foothills of Jabal Hafeet in Al Ain-UAE. Al Ain
designed to make an International tourism attraction to lure tourist
from the Gulf region. Al Ain is known as "The Garden City of the
Gulf". The Church was established on 21st of January 1979.Over the
years since the inception, St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox
Simhasana Church in Al Ain has served as a center for spiritual
guidance and solace to a number of families and bachelors that have
come from various places of India, Ethiopia, Coptic and Various
Oriental Orthodox Churches.
Over the past
decade, the church has witnessed a phenomenal growth in the number
of members who come to witness the Holy Mass. In addition to God's
blessings, with His Holiness' mercy, the UAE Government have been
allocated a beautiful land (8,100 Square Meter) for worshipping God
together in Al Ain. In January, 2010 the construction work was
completed and consecrated a beautiful church with the blessings of

His Grace Mor Themotheos Thomas, Metropolitan of Kottayam led this year's
perunnal. On 10th evening, after the evening prayer a Colorful
traditional procession was held from Vazhakootam Kadavu to the
Church in which hundreds of faithful participated with lighted
candles. On 11th Morning Holy Penta Mass was offered by H.G Mor
Thimotheos assisted by Fr. Raju John, Fr. Mathew, Fr. Roy George
Kattachira, and Fr. Mathias. Special intercessory prayers were held
during the Holy Qurbono followed by distribution of Nercha (Vechoot).
Afternoon a Colorful traditional procession was held from Oripuram
Kurisinmood to the Church.Vicar Fr. Joykutty Varghese, Fr. Thomas

Delhi
NEW DELHI:
The Feast of St. George was celebrated at St. George’s JSO Church,
Vikaspuri, New Delhi on 7th& 8th May, 2011. This year’s Perunal
programme was led by Mor Gregorios Joseph, Holy Episcopal Synod
Secretary and Metropolitan of Kochi Diocese. On 7th evening, after
the evening prayer Fr. Paulson Edakkattil delivered the Bible
message. A warm welcome was given to Mor Gregorios at the New Delhi
International Airport by the Vikaspuri parishioners. On 8th evening,
a Colorful traditional procession (RASSO) was held from Hastal to
the Church in which hundreds of faithful from different parts of
Delhi participated with lighted candles. Holy Try mass was offered
by H.G Mor Gregorios assisted by Fr. Issac Mathew and Fr. Cherian.
Special intercessory prayers were held during the Holy Qurbono
followed by distribution of Nercha and snehavirunnu.
The
Oriental Orthodox Churches Council Meeting at West Coast
BURBANK: On
Tuesday May 10th, 2011 His Eminence Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan,
Archbishop of the Western Archdiocese, His Grace Archbishop Serapion
of the Coptic Archdiocese, and His Eminence Moushegh Mardirosian,
Archbishop of the Armenian church, and members of three dioceses
clergy participated in their regular Oriental Orthodox Churches
Council Meeting. Upon arriving of the bishops they went to the
cathedral with all clergy and offered a short prayer each in their
languages. The meeting was hosted by the Syriac Orthodox Western
Archdiocese Headquarter at St. Ephraim Cathedral, Burbank, which
began with prayer followed by discussion on the mutual matters which
were listed on the agenda, and the activities of the three unified
churches, in particular the Youth and Sunday School programs, and
joint Clergy Divine Liturgy. As a new business the council discussed
the situation of the Christians in Middle East especially new burned
two Coptic churches in Egypt. The next OOCC meeting will be held at
Holy Martyrs Armenian Orthodox Church, Encino, on Thursday August
25, 2011.After the meeting all attendees enjoyed an agape meal,
which provided by the Western Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese.

MUMBAI: The feast
of St. George was celebrated at St. Ignatius Jacobite Syrian Church,
Marol, Mumbai from 6th May to 8th May, 2011. The festivities started
with Perunnal Flag Hoisting by Vicar immediately after Evening
Prayers on Friday, 6th May.
On Saturday, 7th May, Gospel message was delivered by Rev. Fr. Jiji
Thomas, Vicar of St. Peter's JSO Church, Dombivli.
Holy Qurbana was celebrated on the feast day, 8th May by our Vicar,
Rev. Fr. Mathew George Kallumkal. Traditional Procession was taken
out around the church premises. A large number of faithful
participated and received blessings at this year's feast of St.
George.

KUWAIT CITY: His Grace Mor Eusebios
Kuriakose, Metropolitan of Thrissur and Mumbai dioceses along with a
delegation from St. George Syrian Orthodox Reesh Church, Kuwait
comprising of Rev. Fr. Sajan John, the parish Vicar, Chev. Bijou
Varghese, Mr. Johnson Varghese, Parish Secretary, Mr. Jacob John,
Parish Trustee, Mr. Varghese Chacko, Joint Secretary, has paid a
visit to His Excellency Archbishop Petar Rajic, Apostolic Nuncio of
the Roman Catholic Church at Apostolic Nunciature in Kuwait. The
bishops exchanged greetings and discussed various matters related to
two churches. Bishop H.G. Eusebios is currently on a visit to Kuwait
at the invitation of St. George Universal Syrian Orthodox Reesh
Church.

On 6th Evening the Raasa to St. Gregorios Shrine was followed by
evening prayers, sermon and Blessings. On 7th Morning, the morning
prayers started at 8.00 am followed by the Holy Tri - Mass con -
celebrated by V. Rev C M George Cor - Episcopa, Rev. Fr. Skariah
Joseph and Rev. Fr. V P Johnson. The Holy Qurbono was followed by 'Raasa',
sermon, offerings, Blessings, 'Nercha' and Lelam.

ANGAMALY: The Feast of St. George was
celebrated at Simhasanapally, Thuruthissery on 30th April and 1st
May, 2011 pinned with colorful programmes. This year’s Perunal
programme was led by His Beatitude Catholicos Dr. Baselios Thomas I,
H.G. Mor Athanasius Elias Metropolitan of Antiochean Movement and V
Rev. Roy Abraham Cor-Episcopa. The Vicar Fr. Elias Ipe hoisted the
Perunal flag on 30th April after Holy Qurbono. In the evening, His
Beatitude Catholicos led the prayer followed by Perunal Message. A
Colorful traditional procession (RASSO) was held around the
Simhasana church premises in which hundreds of faithful participated
with lighted candles. On Sunday, the 1st May, Holy Qurbono was
offered by V. Rev. Roy Abraham Cor Episcopa assisted by Fr. Elias
Ipe, the Vicar. Special intercessory prayers were held during the
Holy Qurbono followed by distribution of Nercha.

Chapel, Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The feast of St.
George was conducted in a grand manner at St. George Jacobite
Chapel, Peroorkada at Thiruvananthapuram on 7th May. On 6th evening
there was evening prayers and a massive perunnal raasa which was
conducted for the first time at the place bought by St. Peters JSO
Simhasana Cathedral, Thiruvananthapuram. The perunnal service was
led by Fr. Punnoose Tharakan, former vicar, Vicar Fr. Anish T
Varghese and Fr. Sajan C Alex, Vicar St. Ignatius Knanaya Church ,
Tvpm and was assisted by Dn. Dr. Paul Samuel. Hundreds of faithful
attended the blessed occasion.
The new chapel is situated in a plot bought by
the St Peters Jacobite Syrian Simhasana Church at Peroorkada near
the city limit. It was a dream come true of Jacobites living in and
around this area to have such a place of worship. With the first
perunnal turning a big success, the aspirations of faithful have
turned into reality. The people of this area are working hard to
manage the economic situation which arose from the buying of the
land.
Counseling & Retreat concluded
NADAMEL: MJSSA Retreat and
Counseling concluded at St. Mary's Sunday School, Nadamel,
Thrippoonithura. Fr. Geevarghese Manakkattu inaugurated the
concluding ceremony. Director Shri Roy Thomas presided over.
Hundreds of students from the Diocese participated in the 4 days
longed retreat.

NEW YORK: On Saturday, April 30,
Archbishop His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim presided over the
consecration (Qudosho) ceremony of St. Peter’s Syriac Orthodox
Church in Hicksville, Long Island, New York. He was assisted by His
Eminence Mor Polycarpus Eugene Aydin, Archbishop of Holland, and
several of the area clergy and deacons. Around two hundred faithful
parishioners from New York and New Jersey attended the service which
also included the celebration of the Holy Qurbono (Divine Liturgy).
The Church was purchased a few years ago, and was
recently enlarged and renovated to accommodate the spiritual and
social activities of the parish. Vicar Fr. Gabriel Adde
expressed his gratitude to his parishioners for their efforts and
donations. He likewise, thanked their Eminences, the Archbishops,
the clergy and the guests who came to support the parish on this
blessed day. Dr. Jon Arnette, the president of the church Board, and
Mr. Mounir Chelico, the treasurer, delivered speeches on this
occasion. Dr. Yamo Deniz, the president of the Archdiocesan
Executive Council offered felicitations on behalf of the AEC. Dr.
John Chelico spoke on behalf of the youth of the parish. Following
the service, all attendees were invited to dinner prepared by the
ladies of the church.

BURBANK: On Thursday May 05th, 2011 and
according to the annual tradition implemented by the Syriac, Coptic,
and Armenian Orthodox churches, their Eminences the Archbishops of
the local Orthodox churches celebrated the joint clergy holy
Eucharist at St. Mary’s Coptic Church. The participants were: His
Eminence Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, Archbishop of the Western
Archdiocese, His Grace Archbishop Serapion of the Coptic
Archdiocese, and His Eminence Mosheh Mardirosian, Archbishop of the
Armenian church, assisted by large number of the Archdioceses’

applications for the five year Bachelor of Divinity course for the

Celebrated at St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Rockland,

The feast of St. George and 16th Dukhrono of Late
Lamented Archbishop Mor Athanasius Yeshu Samuel was celebrated at
St. George JSOC, Rockland County, New York on April 30th aynd May
1st. The festivities started with Evening Prayer on Saturday, April
30th lead by Vicar Very Rev. Kuriakose Karukayil Corepiscopos.
Gospel message was given by Rev. Fr. Dileesh Alias. Holy Qurbana was
celebrated on the feast day, May 1st by H.E. Ayub Mor Silvanos,
Archbishop of Knanaya Diocese in North America and Europe. Following
the Holy Qurbana, traditional Procession was lead by the Vicar and
was blessed by Mor Silvanos. Many faithful from the tri-state area
participated and received blessings at this year's feast of St.
George.

St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Simhasana Church,Al Ain, United
Arab Emirates will be elevated to Cathedral by His Holiness
Patriarch Ignatius Zakka Iwas and will be declared by His Beatitude
Catholicos Baselios Thomas I on May 13th 2011.On the same day H.B
Catholicos Baselios Thomas I will install Holy relic of Saint
Gregorios Chathuruthil (Parumala Thirumeni). Diocesan Metropolitan
Mor Aphrem Mathews will be leading and presiding the entire
programmes.
The Church is
located at the foothills of Jabal Hafeet in Al Ain-UAE. Al Ain
designed to make an International tourism attraction to lure tourist
from the Gulf region. Al Ain is known as "The Garden City of the
Gulf". The Church was established on 21st of January 1979.Over the
years since the inception, St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox
Simhasana Church in Al Ain has served as a center for spiritual
guidance and solace to a number of families and bachelors that have
come from various places of India, Ethiopia, Coptic and Various
Oriental Orthodox Churches.
Over the past
decade, the church has witnessed a phenomenal growth in the number
of members who come to witness the Holy Mass. In addition to God's
blessings, with His Holiness' mercy, the UAE Government have been
allocated a beautiful land (8,100 Square Meter) for worshipping God
together in Al Ain. In January, 2010 the construction work was
completed and consecrated a beautiful church with the blessings of

international colloquium on Caste, Religion and Culture started in
Cochin on Sunday, May 01. The event was held at the Renewal Centre

SWEDEN: On Tuesday the 3rd of May, Her Majesty
the Queen of Sweden Siliva gave an audience to the Syrian Orthodox
Youth Organization from Botkyrka Stockholm at the royal palace in
Stockholm.
After a petition from the Syrian Orthodox Youth Organization in
Botkyrka, Her Majesty the Queen Silvia invited representatives to
officially deliver the gift of His Holiness the Patriarch Zakka I
Iwas, that was sent from the Patriarchate in Syria.The gift was a
liturgical bible in the Aramaic language that was delivered by the
hands of the Very Reverend Father Chabo Elkhoury and the deacons
Stefan Aydin and Josef Aslan.

An international colloquium on Caste, Religion and Culture begins in
Cochin
COCHIN: An international colloquium on
Caste, Religion and Culture started in Cochin on Sunday, May 01. The
conference will end on May 04, Wednesday. The event will be held at
the Renewal Centre in Cochin and is being sponsored by the World
Council of Churches (WCC), the National Council of Churches in India
(NCCI), the Centre for Social Studies and Culture (CSSC) and the
Student Christian Movement of India (SCMI). An opening address was
made by Bishop Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese, Chairperson of the
Student Christian Movement of India (SCMI) and Moderator of the
WCC's Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME). The keynote
address on the first day was delivered by Prof. Gopal Guru of
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. During the four-day event
nearly 24 presentations will be made by church leaders, scholars,
academics, activists and writers. The subject matters to be covered
include combating caste, the meaning of being marginalized in a
globalized world, the plight of Dalits within the church in India
today, the interplay of caste and gender, identities in the context
of human rights and caste, aesthetics and media representations.

welcomed at the entrance of the church by His Beatitude Catholicos

Evening Prayers at the tomb, which was followed by Rassa. The
pilgrims who started the pilgrimage to the Holy Tomb were honored by
His Beatitude with the St. Gregorios Abdul Jaleel Medal and
Certificate.
