GENEVA: Archbishop Mor Severios Jamil Hawa, Archbishop of Baghdad & Basra, Archbishop Mor Eusthatios Matta Rohum of Jazirah & Euphrates, the Syriac Orthodox Church's official representative at the WCC Central Committee and Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese, Moderator of CWME of WCC visited the Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches. The bishops were received by the General Secretary at his office in Geneva. Archbishop Amba Bishoy of the Coptic Orthodox Church also joined the delegation. The delegation discussed various things pertaining to the contributions of the Syrian Orthodox Church to the ecumenical movement.

79th Dukhrono of St.Ignatius Elias III celebrated at St. George J S O Church, Narasimharajapura ( Karnataka ) on Feb 19th & 20th

NARASIMHARAJAPURA: The 79th Dukhrono of St. Ignatius Elias III was celebrated with great devotion at St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Narasimharajapura in Karnataka on Feb 19th & 20th.

On 19th evening, the Evening prayers were followed by Sermon, benediction and a eye - catching display of fireworks.

On 20th morning, devotees and faithful started a march on foot at 04.00 am from the five chapels functioning under the Church - St. Ignatius Chapel Susulvani, St.Peter's & St. Paul's Muthinakoppa, St. Thomas Karuguntha, St. Mary's Varakatte and St. Baselios Gubbiga. The faithful marching from the five chapels joined together on the outskirts of Narasimharajapura town around 10.00 am and continued their march towards St. George church. The piligrims reached the church at about 11.15 am and were received under the leadership of the vicar, V. Rev A V Jacob Cor - Episcopa Arakkal and the church managing committee.

A Holy Tri - Mass was celebrated with V. Rev. C M George Cor- Episcopa Chempakaparambil as the chief celebrant and assisted by Rev. Fr. V. P Johnson Vattodamthadathil and Rev. Fr. Shanoj P. The Divine Liturgy was followed by special intercessory prayers, Prayers of incense, Sermon, offerings, Benediction, 'Lelam' and 'Nercha'.

St. George J S O Church, Narasimharajapura, having been found in 1952, is one of the oldest churches in Karnataka. This is one of the first churches outside Kerala where the Holy relics of St. Ignatius Elias III have been interred. The Holy relics were interred in the church by Late lamented Mor Athanasios Paulose Kadavil of EAE on May 8th 1976.

The Perunnal celebrations were led by the Vicar, V. Rev. A V Jacob Cor - Episcopa Arakkal and assisted by Rev. Fr. A J George Arakkal, Rev. Fr. V P Johnson Vattodamthadathil, Rev. Fr. Shanoj P and Rev. Fr. Thankachan Varghese.

ATHYADI, KARNATAKA : 'Dukhrono' of Mor Yuhanon Ma'bdono was celebrated at St. John, the Baptist shrine - Chadathukal functioning under St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Athyadi in Karnataka state on Feb 20th & 21st. H.G Mor Anthonios Yakub - Asst. Metropolitan of Mangalore diocese & Honnavar Mission was the chief celebrant.

On 20th evening, a 'Raasa' was held from the Church to the Holy Shrine following which Evening prayers, sermon and Benediction were conducted.

On 21st morning, the Holy Qurbana was celebrated at 09.00 am by H. G Mor Anthonios Yakub at the shrine assisted by the Vicar, V. Rev. C. M George Cor - Episcopa Chempakaparambil, Rev. Fr. H.B. the Catholicose will be the chief celebrant for the Holy Qurbana (Tri-mass) to be celebrated on 27^th (Sunday) 2011 at 2:30pm. Pre Marital Orientation Course of Mylapore Diocese held at Secunderabad Church

SECUNDERABAD: The second pre-marital orientation course of the Mylapore diocese was held in the Mor Gregorios Jacobite Syrian Orthodox church, Mettuguda, Secunderabad on February 12th and 13th, 2011. 22 youngsters including 8 women attended the intensive sessions held in church. Dr. Vijayalakshmi, Fr. Dr. George Varughese and Fr. Jerry Kurian led the sessions which included topics like the institution of marriage in the church, society and local culture, understanding of marriage and family from biblical/Christian, theological and multi-faith perspectives, needs in marriage, psychology of men and women, communication in the family, sexuality, knowing the self, exploring the other, discussing issues before and after marriage, the battle of the sexes, new challenges and concerns regarding marriage and married life, marital conflict transformation and sex and health. The other highlight of the programme was the attendance of the parents for one session on Sunday. Fr. Mathews Panachikal (Vicar), Baskiyammo Smt. Beena and family along with the committee members and other church members offered all possible hospitality and facilities for the smooth conduct of the counselling course. Metropolitan Mor Osthatheos Ishaq has been the guiding force for the programme and two courses have so far been conducted in a short span of time. PERTH, AUSTRALIA: His Beatitude Catholicos Baselios Thomas I and Metropolitan Mor Irenios Paulose (Metropolitan of Diocese of Kozhikode & Patriarchal Vicar of Australia & New Zealand) were accorded a warm reception at Perth International Airport on February 17, Thursday. Cor Bishop V. Rev. Boutros Touma Issa, Fr. Joemon Thomas, Shri. Reji Paul and lots of faithful were present.

On Friday 18th February 2011, His Beatitude visited the residences of the members of St. Peter’s congregation. At 6:00 p.m. His Beatitude and the accompanying delegation visited V. Rev. Fr. Boutros Touma Issa’s residence where His Beatitude held a prayer followed by dinner.

Following some rest, His Beatitude and the accompanying delegation paid a visit to Our Lady Virgin Mary and Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church, where an official reception was held in honor of His Beatitude headed by Rev. Fr. Abram Abdel Malek, when the deacons sang hymns specifically for the reception of the fathers of the church. His Beatitude conveyed a speech that was translated into English by Dr. Mathew Samuel, where His Beatitude talked about the strong relationship between the two churches (the Syrian and the Coptic), commending the efforts of Rev. Fr. Abram on the activities of the church, expressing his pleasure when thinking about the love and blissful relationship between the two churches. A floral arrangement was presented to His Beatitude.

This was followed by a speech conveyed by Rev. Fr. Abram Abdel Malek thanking His Beatitude on this gesture visiting the sister Coptic church presenting greetings from his brother His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, Pope of the See of St. Mark, His Grace Bishop Suriel, Bishop of the Diocese of Malbourne and Affiliated Regions. After the speeches, gifts were exchanged.

PERTH, AUSTRALIA: The Coptic Orthodox Community at Perth welcomed His Beatitude Catholicos Baselios Thomas I on February 19, Saturday. Fr. Abraham Abdalmalek of the Coptic Orthodox Church welcomed the delegation. Later His Beatitude was the chief celebrant for the Holy Tri Mass celebrated at the church. His Grace Mor Irenios Paulose Metropolitan, Very Rev. Cor Bishop Boutros Touma Issa, Fr. Abram Abdelmalek were the co celebrants. Hundreds of faithful from Syriac Orthodox Church and Coptic Orthodox Church participated.

His Beatitude , His Grace and V. Rev. Fr. Boutros Touma Issa celebrated a Holy Tri Mass at St Ephraim’s church. Also assisted in this tri mass Rev. Fr. Abram Abdel Malek and some twelve deacons from St. Ephraim and St. Peter’s congregations in the presence of Rev.Fr Joman Konavadayil Thomas. It was history in the making, as it was the first time such a tri mass is held here in Perth. During the Holy Mass, a memorial service was held for St. Patriarch Mor Ignatius Elias III, thereafter His Beatitude conveyed a speech talking about the 79th anniversary of the dhukrono of St. Elias, and His Beatitude’s visit to His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, urging the faithful to always keep the faith, and always maintain love. This was followed by a speech by V. Rev. Fr. Boutros Touma Issa in which he declared this day a historic day with the visit of His Beatitude and the memorial service for St. Mor Elias, and the presence of His Grace Mor Irenious and all the faithful from the St. Ephraim, St. Peter congregations and the Coptic community.

Towards the end of the service, His Grace conveyed a speech before His Beatitude and His Grace blessed the community and both V. Rev Fr Boutros & Rev Fr Joman administered the holy communion.

KOTTAYAM: Metropolitan of Kottayam, Mor Themotheos Thomas presented the Pectoral Cross and Chain from His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas to Fr. V. M Geevarghese ( Kolloparambil Achen), for his unmatched contribution to the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church and society in whole, throughout his life in different positions. The 80th Year celebration of deacon hood of Fr. Geevarghese was also held on the occasion. Late Lamented Patriarch St. Ignatius Elias III consecrated him as Korooyo in 1932. Very Rev. Cor Bishop Kuriakose Kizhzkkedathu, Bar Etho Briro Dr. Babu Paul IAS, Commander Skaria Thomas (Ex-MP) and other reputed personalities were present. Kolloparambil achen served the Holy Church as her Priest Trustee in mid fifties. In 1964, His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Ya`qub III honoured him with Mor Severios Medal. He was honoured with Acharya Award in 2004.

MA`ARAT SAYYIDNAYA, DAMASCUS: His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas decorated Shri. John Samuel Kanjirakkattuthekkathil with the title of Commander on 19th February 2011 at Saint Ephrem Monastery. Commander John Samuel belongs to St. George Horeb Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Chennithala and a member of Dubai St. Ignatius JSO Cathedral for thirty years.

He was the treasurer, vice president and signatory of the Cathedral for many years. He was a key member in the allotment of the land for Mor Ignatius Cathedral Dubai. He was an active member in the Finance and Technical Committee of the church during the construction of the Cathedral. He is the one responsible for obtaining the permission from the municipality for an extension of the church and the construction.

The General Body of the Cathedral unanimously proposed his name for a title from the Holy Throne and recommended by Mor Milithios Yuhanon the Patriarchal Vicar.

AHMEDABAD: St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church celebrated 79th Dukhrono Of St. Ignatius Elias III & Youth Day on 13th February 2011. 8:15am Morning Prayer 9:00am Holy Qurbono led by Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Kollannur 10.30 am special intercessory prayer and perunnal end with the Nercha. On this occasion Fund Raising Lucky Coupon inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Binu George from Maninagar Syro Malabar Church and was given to Mr. Noel Pukadyil.11.30 am to 1.00 pm a class was conducted by Rev. Fr. Binu George. Thereafter a Sradha Sadhya was organized which was sponsored by Mr. Noel Pukadyil. Soon after that a debate competition was conducted on the topic “Is Our Younger Generation Getting Away From Spirituality Yes Or No” followed by “Jacobite Premier League”(JPL) cricket match holding two teams Kerala v/s Outside Kerala. The Kerala team defeated Outside Kerala by 12 runs. Man of the match Mr. Nibu Thomas, Sterling Hospital, Ahmedabad. Thereafter a small tea arrangement was organized and end of the Youth Day program was concluded by evening with a Charity activity near Doordarshan Area. JPL Award distribution was conducted on 20/02/2011 after the Holy Qurbono.

MANARCAD: H.G Mor Osthatheos Ishaq remembered that Malpano Kassesso Cherian Kottayil was one of the most respected and renowned priest of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox church also a blessed poet, writer, preacher and a greatly respected teacher of Holy Jacobite Syrian Church. Fr. Cherian truly testified the compassion and love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thiruvananthapuram St. Peters JSO Simhasana Cathedral came first for the competition. Karingachira St. George Cathedral (Kochi Diocese) & Vadavathoor Mor Aphrem Jacobite Church (Kottayam Diocese) came second and third position respectively. Winning teams were awarded with the prizes as below.

NARASIMHARAJAPURA: 79th Dukhrono of St. Ignatius Elias III Bava will be celeberated at St. George J S O Church, Narsimharajapura on Feb 19th & 20th.

On 19th Evening, faithful will march on foot from the five chapels functioning under the church - Gubbiga, Karuguntha, Susulavani, Muthinakoppa & Varakatte to the main Church which will be followed by evening prayers and sermon.

On 20th morning, the Holy Qurbana will be celebrated at 08.30 am followed by special intercessory prayers, prayers of incense, Raasa, Benediction, 'Nercha' and 'Lelam'.

Narasimharajapura church is one of the oldest Jacobite churches outside Kerala being established in 1952. The Holy relics of St. igantius Elias bava have been interred here in 1976.

Pilgrimage to Perumbilly Church from Kottayam      Manorama

H.G Dr. Mor Geevarghese Coorilos felicitates Archbishop Anastasios of Albania at the launch of his new book in Geneva

GENEVA: Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese, Metropolitan of Niranam diocese congratulated Archbishop Anastasios of Albania (Head of Albanian Orthodox Church), one of the Presidents of the World Council of Churches, on the publication of his new book "Mission in Christ's Way". The book was launched at a function held at the Library Hall of the World Council of Churches during the Central Committee Meeting in Geneva. Dr. Mor Coorilos, Moderator of the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) of WCC thanked His Beatitude Anastasios who had also served as moderator of the CWME in the past for his contributions to the missiological debate within the WCC and expressed the hope that the new book would contribute immensely to the process of drafting a new Mission Statement for the WCC, a project the CWME has already undertaken. Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese is attending the Central Committee meeting of the WCC in Geneva as an Advisor. His Eminence Mor Eusthathius Matta Rohum is also attending the Central Committee as the official member of the Central Committee, representing the Syrian Orthodox Church. The meeting which began on February 16 will end on 23rd of February.

Rev Fr. is completing the Diamond Jubilee of his Priesthood and 80th anniversary of his Deacon ship.

NEW DELHI: A warm reception was give to His Eminence Mor Theophilos George Saliba, (The secretary to the Holy Universal Synod of Syrian orthodox church and Arch Bishop Mount Lebanon) and to the delegates who came for the feast of St. Ignatius Elias III.In New Delhi Indira Gandhi international airport the group was received by His Grace Issac Mor Osthatheos , the Metropolitan of Delhi and the priest of Delhi Region. Later the group moved to St. Gregorios Jacobite Syrian Church, Chatrapoor.

His Eminence Mor Theophilos offered prayers and Firmo in the Church and also in the Kabar, where the Holy relics of St. Elias III is installed. H.G. Mor Osthatheos Issac welcomed the group and Mor Theophilos in his speech mentioned about the visit of Mor Elias 111 to to Delhi during His apostolic visit to India. He also added the strong and deep devotion of the Syriac orthodox people to keep up their faith and tradition where ever they are. The group was very impressed with the Syriac songs sung by the choir in the Church and His Eminence gave them gifts. Fr. Markose, Fr. Benny, Fr. Paulson Edakkattil, Fr. Geevarghese Puthumanakudiyil, Fr. Cheryian, Fr. Binsu , Fr. Pradosh and Comdr. Rajan Skariah ( Diocesan Laity Secretary) attended the program. The group will return to Lebanon on 18th early morning from New Dehi.

BANGKOK: Metropolitan Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese has attended the first meeting of the Program Area Committee of Faith, Mission and Unity (FMU) cluster of Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) as Resource Person. Mor Coorilos was invited to give a talk on "Mission Concerns within the World Council of Churches" with particular focus on the on going debate on the Code of Conduct on Conversion. The meeting was held at Bangkok Christian Guest House in Bangkok from 9-11 February, 2011. The Program Area Committee members from various parts of Asia attended the three days workshop. Dr. Hope Antone and Dr. Sungkook Park, Executive Secretaries for Theological Concerns and Mission were the main leaders of the meeting.

Ordination ceremony was consecrated by The Patriarch His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas and assisted by Mor Philoxinos Mattiyas Nayis, the Patriarchal Assistant, Mor Severios Malke Mourad (Patriarchal Vicar of Jerusalem & Jordan) and Mor Dionysius Yuhanon Kawaq (Patriarchal Office Director) metropolitans. Rev. Fr. Mathew Karimpanackal will henceforth be known as "Mattha (Mathews) Ramban".

Morning prayer started at 8:00 AM and Holy Qurbono at 9.00 AM Ordination was done in between the Qurbono after the bartsmalko. Rev. Deacon Barsoma also elevated to the order of Ramban along with Rev. Fr. Mathew will henceforth be known as Barsoma Ramban. KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN: A reception ceremony was held to honour His Excellency Mr. Mohankumar, the Indian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and Her Excellency Mr. Fayzah Escander Ahmed, Charge de Affairs of Syrian Embassy to the Kingdom of Bahrain, at St. Peter’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church on Friday 4th February 2011.

H. E. The Indian Ambassador delivered a key message to the audience that the world is his home, to serve mankind is his religion and humanity is his citizenship. H. E. The Syrian Charge de Affairs mentioned about the need of unity among mankind by saying we are living in one world under one sky and breathing the same air.

Priests from Bahrain Marthoma Parish, St. Paul’s Marthoma Parish and more than 400 parishioners attended the ceremony. Mementos were presented to the dignitaries by Rev. Fr. Thomas Nediyapalackal, Vicar & President of St. Peter’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church.

Manila: The officers meeting of the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) of the World Council of Churches was held in Manila from February 1-5, 2011. The meeting was held to make preparations for the forthcoming Mission Conference to be held in Manila in March next year. The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) would host the conference. About 200 delegates from all the over the world are expected to attend the Mission Conference in 2012. Dr. Coorilos Geevarghese, Moderator of the CWME, Dr. Kirsteen Kim, Vice Moderator and Dr. Jooseop Kuem, secretary are the officers of the CWME and they had discussions with the leaders of the NCCP at the headquarters of the NCCP.

Malayalam translation of the book, The History of the Syrian Church in India, written in Arabic by H.H. Ignatius Yacoob 111 will be published next week.

Introduction & Contents

H.H. wrote this book in 1951.It will be published next week by Mor Adai Study Centre. It is translated by Dr. Matti Moosa into English and Mr. Jacob Varghese rendered it into Malayalam. This book sheds new light into the various documents in Syriac related to the Church History. Many of the Syriac documents treasured in the Edavazhikkal family is quoted extensively by His Holiness.

Aji George and Rev Fr. Sebastian were present on the occasion. H.G Mor Kuriakose Theophilose was accorded a warm welcome by the faithful. Lots of faithful from different parts of Rome participated in the "Perunnal".

VATICAN CITY: The 8th meeting of the International Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches were held at Vatican, Rome from 25-29th January 2011. The delegates had a meeting with H.H. Pope Benedict XVI on Friday, 28th Jan. Archbishop of Mount Lebanon & Secretary of holy Episcopal synod,  Mor Theophilose George Saliba and Metropolitan of MSOTS, President of Ecumenical Secretariat of MJSOC, & Patriarchal Vicar of Middle Europe, Dr. Mor Theophilose Kuriakose represented the Syrian Orthodox Church. Archbishop Mor Theophilose Saliba presented a Paper on "The Communion and Communication that Existed between the Churches until the mid-fifth century of the of the Christian History, as well as the Role Played by Monasticism " while Dr. Mor Theophilose Kuriakose presented a Paper on the " Communion and Communication between the St. Thomas Christians of India and Other Churches till mid-fifth Century A.D - A Syrian Orthodox Perspective".

Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese attends the WCC-Vatican consultation on a Code of Conduct on Conversion

BANGKOK: Metropolitan Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese participated in a three day consultation on a Code of Conduct on Conversion, jointly organised by the Inter religious Department of World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, Vatican. The Consultation was held at Hotel Arnoma in Bangkok from 25-28 January, 2011. Dr. Coorilos was part of a high level delegation of the WCC. Top officials from the Vatican and representatives from the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) also attended the consultation. This was the last of a series of consultations. The earlier ones were held in Lariano, Italy and Toulouse, France. The Bangkok meeting finalised the code of Conduct on Conversion and it would be officially launched soon.

BANGALORE: Bangalore Diocese Council meeting was held at St. Peter's & St. Paul's J S O Church, Mathikere on Sunday, Jan 30th. His Beatitude Dr. Baselios Thomas I Catholicos - the Diocesan Metropolitan  presided over the meeting. HG Mor Osthatheos Pathrose took over as the new Asst. Metropolitan of Bangalore Diocese. Decision was taken to form a 'Diocesan Development Committee' to co-ordinate the activities of the Diocese. Bangalore diocese will be divided into five zones to facilitate development. New Congregations will be formed soon. HB the Catholicose will be taking further decisions concerning the Diocese. HG Dr. Mor Coorilos Geevarghese also participated along with His Beatitude, Mor Osthatheos and the Priests & Members of the Bangalore Diocesan Council.
