Geevarghese attended WCC-CWM meeting on "Ubuntu" in Bostwana
BOSTWANA: Metropolitan Dr. Mor Coorilos
Geevarghese attended a three day conference on "Ubuntu" (African
concept of inter-relationship between human beings), jointly
organized by the WCC and the Council for World Mission (CWM) In
Kanye, Bostwana in Southern Africa from August 23-27, 2010. Thirteen
leading theologians and church leaders from different countries
attended this "think-tank" meeting. The conference included visits
to rehabilitation centers for HIV-AIDS affected people and talks by
tribal chiefs in the setting of "kgotla" (the traditional place
where the clans meet and discuss and decide on issues). Pictures
here show the visits to the HIV-AIDS rehab centers, the meeting at
the 'kgotla' and a group photo of the participants, in front of a
traditional hut and meeting place made purely of mud.

congregation at Perth, Australia. The St. Aphrem’s medal was
presented to him by Catholicose HB Mor Baselios Thomas I. The public
meeting was held on 21st August at St. Peter’s JSS Cathedral,
Thiruvananthapuram at 7.30 PM. The Metropolitan of Australia and
Kozhikode dioceses HG Mor Iraneos Paulose was present for the
function. Felicitations were given by Rev Fr. Anish T. Varghese,
Rev. Fr. Mathias Kavunkal, Comm. Dr. C.A. Ninan, Bar Eto Briro Dr.
D. Babu Paul and Chev. Koshy M. George. A memento was presented to
Chev. Dr. Mathew Samuel by St. Peters Morth Mariam Vanitha Samajam.
A "ponnada" was given by Church Secretary Mr. Elias. Reply speech
was delivered by Chev. Dr. Mathew Samuel.
Dr. Mathew Samuel is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Perth, Western
Australia and belongs to St. Peters JSS Cathedral Thiruvananthapuram.
He is the eldest of three sons of Mr. M. Samuel ( Currently Trustee
of St. Peters JSS Cathedral) and Mrs. Ammini Samuel. His wife is Dr.
Binu Susan Kuruvila , who is doing her fellowship in Cardiology at
Perth. They have two daughters – Reshma and Shreya. His youngest
brother Dn. Dr. Paul Samuel , an ENT surgeon serves as Youphadyakno
of Kollam diocese currently in Thiruvananthapuram.

ALLAPRA: Conserving the environment is
the duty of youth, said His Beatitude Catholicos Dr. Baselios Thomas
I. His Beatitude was addressing the audience after inaugurating the
youth camp of Perumbavoor Region of Ankamali Region, Shaino
Yarukhoyo at Koinoniya, the regional centre on Aug 21, Saturday.
His Beatitude planted a sapling and inaugurated the project of Youth
Association. Seminars on "Ecology in the Biblical context", "Ecology
in the vision of patriarchs" and "Ecology in the context of social
life" were taken by H.G. Mor Aphrem Mathews Metropolitan, Rev. Fr.
Jomy Joseph and Mr. Chinnan T. Painadathu respectively. The camp was
chaired by the auxiliary metropolitan of the Perumbavoor region,
H.G. Mor Aphrem Mathews. The regional Vice-President, Rev. Fr. Biju
Varkey Korattiyil welcomed the gathering. Rev. Fr. Regi Thekkineth,

intercessory prayers to St.Mary, Mother of God was released during
Holy Qurbana on 26th August, 2010 in connection with
Eight Days Lent which will start on 31st August. The
prayer will be distributed to all those who are in need and staying
in various Labour Camps across Oman. Under the able leadership and
guidance of the Vicar Rev.Fr.Alias Ipe, Vanitha Samajam Members
would distribute the prayer irrespective of caste,Creed and colour.
The programme is arranged to make proper awareness about the urgency

YORK: St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Lynbrook, New York
of Malankara Archdiocese celebrated the Feast of Assumption of St.
Mary, the Patron Saint on August 14th and 15th. On Saturday August
14th Rev. Fr. C. A. Thomas ( Knanaya Archdiocese in USA) delivered
gospel message followed by the evening prayer. Vicar Rev. Dr.
Varghese Manikat (Diocesan Secretary) celebrated the Holy Qurbono
and lead the special intercession prayer on the perunnal day. Rev.
Dn. Dr. Jerry Jacob MD addressed the faithful and explained the
importance of St. Mary in Orthodox Syrian Christian faith.
In a special meeting , the new academic graduates of the parishes
were honoured. Rev. Dr. Varghese Manikat distributed special awards
sponsored by Bibu and Bikki in loving memory of their parents late
Mrs Annamma Jacob and Mr. Kuruvilla Jacob
Following the Holy Qurbono a traditional rasa was held on the nearby
street. A delicious luncheon was also served after the closing
prayer and Benediction. Many faithful from nearby parishes attended
the Feast of St. Mary's at Lynbrook Church located at the heartland

RELIEF: Malankara Archdiocese in USA released check for $ 28,172
NEW JERSEY: In a
special meeting held at the St. George Syrian Orthodox Church,
Carteret, New Jersey on Saturday , August 21st Mr. Andrew Kerr , the
official representative of the Charity Organization " Hands on
Disaster Response "(HODR) accepted the check for the amount of $
28,172(Twenty eight thousand one hundred seventy two Dollars) from
Mor Titus Yeldho , Archbishop and Patriarchal Vicar of the Malankara
Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in North America. Rev,Fr.
Geevarghese Jacob Chalissery(Diocesan Joint Secretary), Mr.Abraham
Mathew (Diocesan Treasurer), Rev. Dr. A. P. George(Vicar, St. George
Church Carteret), Rev. Dn. Akash Paul, Ms. Tina Geevarghese (MGSOSA
Official), Mr. T.V. John (Diocesan Sunday School Director), Mr. Raju
Abraham (St. Pauls Coordinator) , Mr. Saju Paulose Maroth ( Diocesan

KANDANAD: Very. Rev. Punnachalil
John Corepiscopa celebrated his 40th year of priestly ordination.
John Punnacalil Corepiscopa was ordained as priest by H.B.
Catholicose Baselious Paulose II, on august 15, 1970. H.H. Ignatius
Zaka I ordained him as a Corepiscopa in the year 1999. At present he
is serving as the vicar of St. Mary's JSO Cathedral Kandanad. H.G
Mathews Mor Ivanious Presided over the function. Rev Fr. Jibi John
Ichikottil and Fr. Shaji Meppadath along with hundreds of faithful
participated in the function.
Combined VBS held at
New Jersey
NEW JERSEY: St. George Syrian
Orthodox Church, Carteret, New Jersey hosted the fourth combined VBS
of four Parishes of Malankara Archdiocese in Staten Island and New
Jersey( Southern Area) regions on August 20Th,21st and 22ND,2010
under the leadership of Clergy , Sunday School Headmasters and Youth
volunteers. St.George Church Carteret, New Jersey, St.James Church,
Livingston New Jersey, St.Johns Church, Staten Island, NY and Mor
Gregorios Church, Staten Island, NY were the participating churches.
About 75 children's guided by teachers and volunteers took part in
VBS based on the Theme". The children's were divided into five
groups based on their age. Participants learned songs in English,
Hindi and enjoyed interactive sessions, role plays, art and craft
work shops, theme learning, puppet shows , slide show and water
games. On the final day prior to the closing ceremony children's and
teachers took part in a colorful rally on the nearby street wearing
VBS T-shirts and crowns. The children's were weaving VBS flags and
were singing the theme song H-E-R-O. Jesus is my Hero .
Children's from all classes reflected their experiences of the three
day events in the closing meeting. They performed action songs,
skits and talent shows. " The continuous dedication and team work of
volunteers and teachers under the guidance of respected priests made
this a blessed and memorable event. " said Archbishop Mor Titus
Yeldho in his speech. V. Rev. David Cheruthottil Corepiscopo, Rev.
Dr. A. P. George, Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Jacob Chalissery, Rev. Dn.
Akash Paul and Mr. Abraham Mathew were addressed in VBS. Lunch,
Dinner and Snacks have served to all participants for three days by
the generous support of various parishes and well wishers.

America: Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund handed over on August
21st
NEW JERSEY: H.E. Titus Yeldho Metropolitan, Archbishop and Patriarchal
Vicar of The Malankara Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in
North America donated a generous sum of money collected(Haiti Relief
Fund) to the non profitable organization " Hands on Disaster Relief
(HODR)" based in Leogane, Haiti( the earthquake epic center). The
ceremony was held on Saturday, august 21st at 10:00AM at St. George
Syrian Orthodox Church, Carteret, New Jersey. An administrative
representative of HODR attended this meeting .
Ms. Tina Geevarghese, official of MGSOSA of Malankara Archdiocese
went to Haiti to volunteer for the organizations relief efforts.
During the ceremony Ms. Tina and friends shared their experience in
Haiti.

MA`ARAT SAYYIDNAYA,
DAMASCUS: An official delegation of Roman Orthodox Church,
commissioned by His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Hazim IV visited His
Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas at St. Ephraim Patriarchal
Monastery here on August 19, Thursday. The delegation was sent by
Ignatius Hazim IV to wish Holy Father on the occasion of 30th
enthronement of Holy Father and to strengthen the historic relation
between the two churches. The delegation included Archbishops and
bishops of Roman Orthodox Church. The meeting was also attended by
Archbishop Mor Gregorios Youhanna Ibrahim (Aleppo & Environs), Mor
Theophilose George Saliba (Secretary to the Episcopal Synod,
Archbishop, Mount Lebanon), Mor Clemis Daniel Kurieh (Patriarchal
Vicar, Bierut) and Mor Philoxenos Mathiyas Nayis (Patriarchal

Centenary of Knanaya Archdiocese celebrated at St. Mary's JSO
Knanaya Church here on August 15, Sunday. Great Metropolitan and
Archbishop of the Knanaya Jacobite Archdiocese, Mor Severios
Kuriakose inaugurated the centenary celebrations. Honourable Judge
of Supreme Court, Justice Mr. Cyriac Joseph was the chief guest.
Earlier, H.E Mor Severios Kuriakose led the Holy 9-nmel Qurbono in
the morning.

Mother Mary celebrated at St. Mary's JSO Knanaya Church, Bangalore

Court also rejected the 7392/09 case filed by "Metran

The Oriental Orthodox Churches Council
Meeting held at California
CALIFORNIA:
Hosted by the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese of the
Western US, the heads of the Oriental Orthodox Churches accompanied
by clergy representatives of the Western United States, met on
Tuesday August 17th, 2010 and discussed issues of the mutual
interests at St. Ephraim Syriac Orthodox Cathedral, Burbank,
California.
The attendees of the Syriac Orthodox Church were: His Eminence
Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan with very Rev. Fr. Abdulahad
Shara, and Rev. Fr. Louis Yacoub. From the Armenian Church were His
Eminence Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, accompanied with Rev. Fr.
Bartev Goulmian, and Rev. Fr. Vasken Atmajian. From the Coptic
Orthodox Church His Grace Bishop Serapion, accompanied with Rev. Fr.
Bishoy Kamel, and Fr. Anthony Attallah.
This year's annual joint Clergy Divine Liturgy, will
be held at St. Ephraim Cathedral, Burbank on Tuesday September 28th.
It is decided to convene next meeting of the Oriental Orthodox
Churches Council on Tuesday November 23rd.

KANDANAD: The feast of Assumption of Mother Mary concluded at Morth Mariyam JSO Cathedral, Kandanad on August 15,
Sunday. Metropolitan of Kandanad Diocese, Dr. Mor Ivanios Mathews
led the Holy Tri Mass on Sunday. Vicars of the Cathedral, Very Rev.
John Punnachalil, Fr. Jibi John Ichikottil and Fr. Shaji Meppadath
assisted the metropolitan. Thousands of faithful participated in the
feast and nercha which held following the traditional Rassa. Dr. Mor

Orthodox Church Mayur Vihar, Delhi celebrated the feast of
Assumption of St. Mary on 14th and 15th August 10. Hundreds of
devotees participated in the procession on 14th evening. Colourful
embellished umbrellas, church flags, songs, lighted candles, panchavadyam,
and fireworks were added the vibrant of the procession. Rev. Fr.
Varghese Paul, Vicar, St. Peters Cathedral, Delhi, Rev.Fr.Pradosh,
Vicar, St. Thomas Church, Kingsway Camp, Delhi, Rev. Fr. Eldho, and
Rev. Fr. Issac Mathew, Vicar St. Mary’s Church Mayur Vihar lead the
procession. The Holy Tri-Mass celebrated on Sunday
15th August, Rev. Fr. Biju Kavattu, as the Chief Celebrant at Main
Altar along with Rev. Fr. Paulson Edakkattil, and Rev. Fr. Eldho on
other altars.
Subsequent to the holy mass a public meeting was arranged to
facilitate the high performers of Class X and XII of the
church. Lisa Ann Mathew , Class XII and Eldho Elias and Annu Baby,
Class X were awarded the Academic Excellence Award. Good
performance Awards were presented to Divya Babay & Akhil Abraham for
Class XII and Melvin Baby, Anu Abraham & Jilu K Job for Class X.

celebrates the Feast of Assumption of Mother Mary
KOLKATA: St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church,
64-H, Linton Street, Kolkata celebrated its Perunal on Sunday the
15th August 2010. The programme included the Evening Prayer on
Saturday, the 14th. The Holy Qurbono was celebrated by the Vicar,
Rev. Fr. Philipose Abraham in the morning on 15th at the Parish. All
the members of the parish and the young people who are Jacobites
staying in an around the City of Joy participated in the Perunal.
While addressing the gathering during the Holy Qurbono, the Vicar
called upon the members to take refuge in the God Almighty with all
their problems and also pray for the intercession of Mother Mary.
Rev. Dn. Varughese of Kandanad Diocese, who is doing the final year
for the B.D. programme in the Bishops College, attended the
program and also assisted the Vicar in the Holy Qurbono and also
in the Rasa.

on issues within their church. Let them set their house
in order before advising or ridiculing others.

The
Malankara Syrian church traditions teach us that when a
Raasa is held, the number of priest wearing the
ceremonial liturgical vestments has to be a odd number -
1, 3, 5 and so on... But in the recent "Raasa"
held by the "metran kakshis" in Kandanad Martha
Mariam church ( where they are continuing to
parasitically hold on to us against the wishes of 95 %
of the parishioners ), this tradition was forgotten.
As
seen in the photograph, we see two priests in ceremonial
vestments. In their urge to somehow get in either their
'Parishuddan ' or 'niyuktan' through one of the church
windows ( which fortunately did not happen ), they seem
to have forgotten what the traditions teach us. Just a
suggestion to the "metran kakshis" - ' Instead of
looking for defects and shortcomings in other churches,
try to set your house in order first'.

said H.E Lt. Governor Bhopinder Singh PVSM of Andaman & Nicobar
Islands. His Excellency was speaking with Mor Osthatheos Issac at
Raj Niwas, the official residence of Lt. Governor at Port Blair
after giving a reception to latter. The services of Syriac Orthodox

We remember
that on one stage this "Koriyachen" had
publically declared " Njaan nunna maathrame
parayarullu ". At that time though we thought it as
his cheap sense of humour on public display, it is after
reading his " historical blunders " that we could
comprehend that what he said on stage was one hundred
percent the truth. He has given a challenge at the end
of his long "kathaprasangam" that if proven
wrong, he will leave the "metran kakshis". Hope

MOUNT LEBANON: His
Holiness the Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas celebrated
the consecration of the Mor Gabriel Church and the Syriac Center in
Ajaltoun – Kesrwan – Mount Lebanon on August 8, 2010. It is a
pioneer center in the Syrian orthodox church of Antioch, and one of
the most important projects of the Archdiocese of Mount Lebanon. It
stands in the town of Ajaltoun, the capital city of Kesrwan and is
15 km away from the coastal city of Jounieh and 30 km to the north
away from Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, admits most of the
villages and towns in the mountain. Anyone going up the mountains or
down to the coast passes through this town –Ajaltoun- the center is
50 m away from the highway.

started at St. Mary's JSO Church here on Aug 08, Sunday. Vicar Rev.
Fr. Saji hoisted the flag and marked the beginning of the feast. The
main days of the feast are Aug 14 & 15. Archbishop Mor Theethoos
Yeldho will be given a reception at the church on Aug 14, Saturday.
His Eminence will lead the Evening Prayers at the church after the
reception. Mor Theethoos will inaugurate the Convention following
the Prayers. On Sunday, Mor Theethoos will lead the Holy Tri Mass
following the Morning Prayers at 8.45 AM.

of cheap yellow journalism by the same Methran Kakshi Media
One of the colour blind "metran
kakshi" media has come with a claim that only 2500 attended the
concluding ceremony of the Metropolitan consecration centenary
of St. Valiya thirumeni. Though it is not necessary to justify
ourselves as the faithful who were present at Aluva know the
fact, we are forced to make a few observations.
Our dear "KOTTAYAM NASRANI SIMHAM (?)", the "self
proclaimed" HIS-STORIAN seems to have forgotten
the fact that if the faithful from just four surrounding
parishes attend the meeting, the numbers will go beyond 25,000.
At the same time we do understand another fact that it will be
difficult for them to comprehend such a large gathering of
faithful as they are used to getting people on hire from Thumpamon/Pathanamthitta areas for their "maha " and "mega"
sammelanams. They just cannot understand the sincere love we
have for our prelates and departed saints when compared to their
"cosmetic" love having an eye only on the offertory placed at
their tombs. While our saints and departed fathers are a part of
our life, their saints are " brand names " for them.
There was no rally planned as a part of the celebrations. But
our friends on the other side have somehow come up with the
conclusion that a rally was cancelled.
We can conclude that all these "journalistic acrobatics" that
we see are to satisfy their cheap ego and nothing else. Another live
example of cheap yellow journalism.
May good sense prevail!!! That's all we can wish and pray.

Two Syrian
Orthodox Churches reopen in Turkey after 30 Years
Turkey: After 30 years, the
Syrian Orthodox Church of Mor Eşayo and Mor Kuryakuş were reopened
yesterday in the village of Midyat’s Yemişli in the region of Mardin,
south-eastern Turkey.
The churches of Mor Esayo and Mor Kuryakus were closed since the
1980’s. The buildings have been restored by 72 Syrian families, who
have spent 600 thousand Turkish lira (about 300 thousand euros).
Hundreds of people belonging to the Syrian Orthodox communities from
around the world attended the inaugural Mass presided by Mor
Timetheos Samuel Aktaş, Metropolitan Bishop of Tur Abdin. In Turkey,
the Syrian Orthodox church has 5 thousand faithfuls.

Syriac Orthodox Convention of Archdiocese of Eastern United States

NEW JERSEY: The
47th Annual Syriac Orthodox Convention of Archdiocese of Eastern
United States concluded at St. Mark's Cathedral here on August 01,
Sunday. The convention was started on July 29, Thursday. As a part
of the convention various events were organized. Archbishop of
Baghdad and Basra, Mor Severios Jamil Hawa, Archbishop Mor Theethoos
Yeldho of Malankara Archdiocese, Archbishop Mor Clemis Ewgene Kaplan
of Western United States, Archbishop Mor Athanasius Elia Bahe of
Canada and Archbishop Dr. Mor Coorilos Aphrem Karim were the Chief
Guests for the convention.
'You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed
you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should
remain.'
John 15:16 was the theme of this year's convention.

through Medias is the need of the hour, urges Metropolitan Mor
Irenios Paulose of Kozhikode Diocese. Mor Irenios was addressing the
audience after inaugurating the Convocation of first batch students
of Diploma in Sound Engineering of Shalom Institute of Media Science
at Peruvannamuzhy, near Kozhikode. Cine Director Siby Malayil
presided over the ceremony convened at Shalom Auditorium.

the office bearers and members of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Youth
Association (JSOYA) held at St. Elias Aramana Chapel at the
Bishop's House premises, Meenangadi, Malabar. Metropolitan Mor
Philoxenos Zacharias inaugurated and led the retreat. Diocesan Vice
President Rev. Fr. Baiju Manayath welcomed the gathering and Babu
Paul Vandanathil (Secretary, JSOYA Malabar Diocese) delivered vote

celebrated Holy Qurbono in the morning. At 11 0'clock felicitation

CALIFORNIA: Archbishop Sumbat Lapajian of Armenian
Orthodox Church passed away at Ararat Home in Mission Hills, Ca on
July 17, 2010. Archbishop Lapajian served within the Armenian
Prelacy for over four decades as pastor of Holy Cross Church in Los
Angeles and Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello.
On Monday, July 26th, 2010, at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello,
His Eminence Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan Archbishop of the Syriac
Orthodox Western Archdiocese US, participated in the Extreme Unction
and funeral services for the late Archbishop Sumbat Lapajian.H.E.
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, the Archbishop of the Armenian
Prelate with several bishop, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at 10:30
a.m., and conducted the Extreme Unction at 11:00 a.m.
By the authorization of H.H. Catholicos Aram I, and per the wishes
of the late Archbishop, the burial took place in the courtyard of
Holy Cross Cathedral at Montebello, Ca.

inaugurated Mor Gregorios Abdul Jaleel Arts & Science College at
North Paravur on August 01, Sunday. Hon. Member of Legislative
Assembly V D Satheesan, Municipal Chairperson N A Ali, vicars of the
church spoke on the occasion. The college starts with BCA, BBA and
BCom degrees which are affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University,
Kottayam.
Malankara Archdiocese
of North America: The project of Archdiocesan Patriarchal Centre
Launched
NEW JERSEY: The culmination of the
Silver Jubilee celebrations of Malankara Archdiocese in North
America was marked by formally launching the Archdiocese
“Patriarchal Center” with a vision to address the present and future
needs of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Christian faithful of North
America. In the inaugural meeting Chaired by H.E. Archbishop Mor
Theethose Yeldho, the Convenor of the “project” Mr. Saju Skaria
(Arizona), shared the vision and objectives of the Center. According
to Mr.Saju Skaria , the “Center” that will be established in phases
is envisioned to have an administrative office, Chapel, Bishop’s
house, Guest House, Convention Center, Business Center, and an
affiliated Theological Seminary and University.
A twelve member committee with Archbishop His Eminence Mor Theethose
Yeldho, as Chairman and Mr. Saju Skaria (Arizona) as Convener has
already resumed the initial operations of the project. It was
informed that the committee will be further expanded to include
subject matter experts and members from parishes across the
Archdiocese.
Rev Dr Varghese Manikat, Archdiocese Secretary offered welcome for
the public meeting. The “project” was formally inaugurated by H.E.
Archbishop Mor Theethose Yeldho by accepting an initial check of
$25,000 (twenty five thousand dollars) from Archdiocese Treasurer
Mr. Abraham Mathew. Silver Jubilee Convener Mr Joby George, National
Coordinator George Korath, Archdiocesan Council Members, Jubilee
Committee Members, Members of the building committee and leaders of
other spiritual organizations participated in this historic event.

were a family, around 500 student volunteers and programme officers
of National Service Scheme, who had assembled at the Government
Women’s College auditorium here on Saturday for the NSS award
ceremony. The institutions and individuals with outstanding NSS
activities in Kerala for 2009-2010 were honoured by Education

Jacobite Church and the general convenor of the Puthencruz
Convention will be ordained as Cor-Episcopa by His Beatitude
Catholicos Baselios Thomas I on 6th of August at Mar Athanasius
Cathedral, Puthencruz. Metropolitans of the church will assist His
Beatitude in the ordination. Fr. George Manthottam, a native of
Muvattupuzha is the current Vicar of the St. Peter's & St. Paul's
JSO Church Kadathy, Muvattupuzha and also serving as the
General secretary of the St. Paul's Prayer Fellowship.

JSO Church Kadathy, Muvattupuzha will be consecrated on 8th of
August by H.G Dr. Mor Theophilose Kuriakose Metropoliton, Professor
and resident Metropolitan of M.S.O.T Seminary and the Metropolitan
of the Middle European Diocese. Dr. Mor Theophilose will celebrate
